"Distributed data bases, such as VIA's, have great appeal for Banyan
customers, because -- as VINES users -- they are already quite familiar
with the principles and advantages of distributed network computing,"
said James Allchin, Banyan Vice President and Chief Technical Officer.
"We are confident VIA for VINES will quickly develop an enthusiastic
following among our customer base."
Porting the VIA data base to VINES has many interesting ramifications,
noted P. E. Borkovitz, VIA President and CEO, because technologically
both products "share remarkable similarities" that enable each to
capitalize on the strengths of the other. In particular, VIA and VINES:
* Utilize similar distributed processing architectures.
* Provide comparable performance to mainframe-based products.
* Support large corporate-type organizations with widely distributed
MIS operations.
* Are equally robust and powerful environments for developers and users.
A key VIA for VINES beta test site is SCM Chemicals of Baltimore,
Maryland, a large organization that has built its PC network on VINES.
According to Arthur H. Fifer, II, Director Information Systems at SCM
Chemicals, "We originally chose VIA/DRE running on a DOS server because
of the distributed nature and high performance offered by the product,
and because the product provides equally robust tools for both the

developer and user. VIA running on the VINES server has been a wonderful
surprise; the architectural similarities between VIA and VINES have
delivered immediate results. Our tests running VIA/DOS and VIA for VINES
showed a 3 to 1 performance improvement."
VIA for VINES was ported from the company's award winning data base
server, VIA/DRETM (Distributed Relational Environment) by means of
Banyan's VINES Applications Toolkit. VIA/DRE is a high-performance
distributed SQL Data Base Server particularly well suited to LAN
application development and distributed data base computing. It was
named Data Base Product of the Year for 1989 LAN Magazine.
VIA for VINES will be available from VIA Information Systems
Corporation, 101 Carnegie Center, Suite 209, Princeton, NJ 08540. (609)

About VIA Information Systems Corporation
VIA Information Systems is a member of The VIA Group, an international
organization which has pioneered the development of Distributed Data
Base Server technology for PC-LANs and WANs.
The VIA product line includes VIA/HostTM, the world's first and only
transparently distributed SQL data base server for PC-LANs and WANs;
VIA/COOLTM, a C-based object-oriented fourth-generation language which
many consider to be the industry's first practical application of the
object-oriented paradigm; a range of utilities for data base
administration (VIA/DBATM), for screen development (VIA/PAINTTM), and for
querying the data base (VIA/VIEWTM); and a full suite of SQL
capabilities, including embedded, modular, interactive, and the new
dynamic SQL. Additionally, its open environment encourages interfacing
with third-party front-end tools.
VIA/DRE (Distributed Relational Environment) is a multi-server, multi-
platform solution for enterprise-wide processing needs, and, as such,
is very well matched with the VINES environment.
